White\, Genealogical Chart with Hair\n\n\n\nThe Amistad Center for Art & Culture is honored to participate in this year’s Fine Art & Flowers celebration at The Wadsworth\, highlighting Genealogical Chart with Hair from Wendel A. White’s acclaimed series Manifest | Thirteen Colonies. \n\n\n\nThe photograph references the pioneering scholarship of Caroline Bond Day\, one of the first Black women to earn a graduate degree in physical anthropology from Radcliffe College in 1930. Founded in 1879 as a prestigious women’s liberal arts college and long affiliated with Harvard University (with which it formally merged in 1999)\, Radcliffe conferred upon Day the academic platform from which she would challenge dominant racial pseudoscience. \n\n\n\nA scholar\, writer\, and educator with affiliations to leading HBCUs—including Clark Atlanta University\, Howard University\, North Carolina Central University\, and Prairie View A&M University—Day’s research rigorously dismantled the racist assumptions embedded within early 20th-century eugenics and physical anthropology. Her genealogical studies affirmed the complexity and dignity of Black ancestry at a time when such scholarship was both radical and necessary. \n\n\n\nThe Floral Interpretation\n\n\n\nThe Amistad Center’s installation will accompany White’s photograph with an arrangement that evokes the expressive range of hair textures—coiled\, braided\, woven\, and spiraled—symbolizing lineage\, identity\, and embodied memory. Interlaced within the design will be treasured family photographs contributed by Amistad staff\, visually extending Day’s genealogical inquiry into the present. \n\n\n\nThis interpretive display serves three purposes: \n\n\n\n\nTribute – Honoring Caroline Bond Day’s intellectual courage and enduring legacy.\n\n\n\nCelebration – Recognizing Wendel A. DESCRIPTION:Presented as part of the I Am A Man: Black Men & Boys Mental Health Initiative \n\n\n\nJoin us for a day of reflection\, connection\, and transformation during this immersive workshop led by Enroue Halfkenny\, LCSW\, clinical social worker\, Babaláwo\, and founder of Healing and Liberation Counseling. Grounded in the traditions of African spiritual healing and liberatory mental health care\, this workshop offers a powerful opportunity to explore tools for emotional wellness\, ancestral grounding\, and community resilience. \n\n\n\nThe day begins with a keynote conversation and ritual opening\, followed by interactive breakout sessions that center holistic approaches to wellness for Black men and boys—and for all those in relationship with them. Through storytelling\, spiritual practice\, embodied healing\, and community dialogue\, participants will explore strategies to navigate trauma\, affirm identity\, and cultivate joy. \n\n\n\nAbout the Initiative: I Am A Man \n\n\n\nThe I Am A Man: Black Men & Boys Mental Health Initiative is a community-centered effort focused on transforming how we understand and support the mental health and wellbeing of African American men and boys. Rooted in a legacy of resistance and self-determination\, the initiative uplifts culturally grounded practices\, intergenerational healing\, and systems change to disrupt cycles of trauma and marginalization. It brings together mental health professionals\, artists\, faith leaders\, educators\, and families to promote collective healing and empowerment. \n\n\n\nAbout the Facilitator: Enroue Halfkenny\, LCSW \n\n\n\nEnroue Halfkenny (Baba Onígbọ̀nná) is a licensed clinical social worker\, Babaláwo in the Yorùbá spiritual tradition\, and the founder of Healing and Liberation Counseling. A Boston-born\, multi-racial Black man of African\, Mi’kmaq\, Cherokee\, Swedish\, and Irish descent\, Enroue integrates ancestral knowledge\, somatic practice\, and social justice into his work with individuals\, families\, and organizations. With over 30 years of spiritual and meditative practice\, and extensive experience as a therapist\, consultant\, and educator\, Enroue offers a deeply rooted\, compassionate\, and transformative approach to healing. White: Manifest | Thirteen Colonies\, curated by Ilisa Barbash\, Visual Anthropologist at The Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology.   \n\n\n\nThis striking body of work by renowned photographer Wendel A. White explores the hidden and recovered histories of African American life through evocative images of objects drawn from archives\, libraries\, and museums across the original thirteen U.S. colonies. Each photographed object—ranging from rare daguerreotypes and manuscripts to everyday personal artifacts—serves as a visual trace of Black presence\, resilience\, and memory.  \n\n\n\nDr. Clunis will discuss the themes of race\, memory\, and material culture embedded in White’s work\, as well as his unique photographic process\, which isolates historical objects against black velvet backdrops to evoke absence\, intimacy\, and reverence. She will also explore the curatorial and cultural significance of the exhibition in the broader context of African American archival history and public memory.  \n\n\n\nThis talk invites visitors to consider how stories are preserved\, who gets remembered\, and how art can reframe our understanding of history.  \n\n\n\nFree with museum admission. DESCRIPTION:The Amistad Center’s Uncomfortable Conversations Series invites artists\, scholars\, and community members to address important topics that promote meaningful dialogue and understanding. This session focuses on voting rights\, access\, participation\, and registration in the United States. It aims to foster open discussion and highlight pathways toward progress.   \n\n\n\nApril 4\, 2025\, Uncomfortable Conversations: Voting Rights\, Access & Participation will feature\, Evelyn M. Simien. She is a Professor of Political Science and Director of the Africana Studies Institute. An award-winning scholar and teacher\, she has authored four books on Black feminist consciousness\, racial-sexual violence\, and symbolic empowerment in U.S. politics.  \n\n\n\nHeld in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, this discussion reflects on the significant social changes inspired by his courageous life and legacy\, as well as the lasting impact of his tragic assassination on April 4\, 1968.
